Choosing a Roof Paint Colour in Hobart
The best roof paint colour suits your home’s style, works with your walls and trim, and handles Hobart’s climate. Darker colours absorb more heat and show fading sooner. Lighter colours reflect more sunlight and keep roof spaces cooler. In heritage areas, check council rules before changing colour.

Some darker colours, including Colorbond® Monument®, can be ordered with Dulux InfraCOOL® technology (gloss only), which makes them absorb less of the sun’s heat than the standard version. Colours on screen and in print may not match the finished roof, so we bring real samples to every quote.

Things To Consider
Light vs Dark Roofs: What's the Difference?
Roof colour affects how much heat the roof absorbs. Lighter roofs reflect more of the sun’s energy, which can reduce heat entering the roof space in summer. Darker roofs absorb more heat. Dulux also offers Cool Roof colours with InfraCOOL technology, designed to reflect more of the sun’s radiation and reduce heat build-up in the roof space. Dulux says its Cool Roof Residential membrane reflects up to 90% of the sun’s total light energy before it turns into heat.
Hobart’s cooler climate means the summer benefit of a light roof is smaller than in mainland cities. Many Hobart owners choose mid-tones as a balance between
appearance and heat performance.
Tips for Choosing the Roof Colour
If you have a Colorbond roof or a Colorbond extension, you can choose from the popular Colorbond colours available in Dulux Acratex Roof Membrane. This keeps gutters, fascias and flashings consistent. See Colorbond roof painting.

Look at the Whole House
Choose the roof colour with your walls, trim and gutters in mind.

Consider your Street and Home Style
A colour that suits the neighbourhood often adds more to resale appeal.

View Color Samples Outdoors
Colours look different on a roof in full daylight than on a small swatch indoors. Dulux notes that printed swatches may not show the true colour, so check actual samples.

Think About Fading and Maintenance
Very dark and very bright colours show fading sooner.
How it Works
Heritage Areas and Council Rules
Parts of Hobart, including Battery Point, North Hobart and other heritage precincts, may have rules on roof colour and materials. If your home is heritage-listed or in a heritage area, check with Hobart City Council or your local council before changing colour.
Matching Colorbond Colours
If you have a Colorbond roof or a Colorbond extension, you can choose from the popular Colorbond colours available in Dulux Acratex Roof Membrane. This keeps gutters, fascias and flashings consistent. See Colorbond roof painting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Roof Colour FAQs
Can I change my roof to a completely different colour?
Yes. Going from dark to light may need an extra top coat for full coverage, which we’ll include in your quote.
Will a lighter roof make my house colder in winter?
Roof colour has much less effect on winter heating than insulation does.
Do you offer colour advice?
Yes. We bring the Dulux Acratex Roofing Colour Card and photos of past jobs to every quote. Dulux’s colour experts are also available on Live Chat, 7 days a week.
