Colorbond & Metal Roof Painting in Hobart
Yes, you can paint a Colorbond roof. If your metal roof is faded, chalky or showing light surface rust, repainting can restore its colour and protection for far less than replacement. We clean the roof, treat rust, apply a metal primer, then finish with two coats of Dulux Acratex Roof Membrane.

Things Clients Asks
When Painting a Metal Roof Makes Sense
Painting is a good choice when the sheets are structurally sound but the factory finish has worn. Common signs:
- Colour has faded or become patchy
- A chalky powder comes off when you rub the surface
- Light surface rust around screws, laps or edges
- Older galvanised roofs that have dulled
When Replacement is the Better Option
We’ll tell you honestly if paint isn’t worth it. Replacement is usually better when:

Holes or Flaking
Rust has gone through the sheet

Buckled or Lifting
Sheets are badly dented

Failed Sheets
The roof leaks from failed sheets rather than fixings

How it Works
Matching Colorbond Colours
Many Hobart homeowners want to keep their original Colorbond colour, or match a new extension. Dulux Acratex Roof Membrane is available in popular Colorbond colours, so you can match your existing roof, gutters or extension. You can also change colour completely. See our roof paint colour guide.
Coastal and Exposed Homes
Homes near the Derwent, on the Eastern Shore or in elevated, windy spots face more salt and weather exposure. Metal roofs in these areas often show corrosion sooner at laps and fixings, so we pay extra attention to rust treatment there.
Frequently Asked Questions
Colorbond Roof Painting FAQs
Does painting a Colorbond roof void the warranty?
It can affect the original manufacturer’s warranty, so check your BlueScope warranty terms first. The Dulux Acratex system carries its own 15-year
material warranty from Dulux, covering film integrity, peeling, and cracking.
How long does paint on a metal roof last?
Dulux offers a warranty of up to 15 years covering film integrity, peeling and cracking for its Roof Membrane products. Dulux also recommends cleaning the roof once a year to remove grime and airborne pollutants.
Can you paint over rust?
Not without treating it first. Painting over active rust traps it, and the rust keeps spreading under the new coat.
Can you paint a galvanised or Zincalume roof?
Yes. Dulux Acratex Roof Primer MX Plus is made for new or weathered galvanised steel, Zincalume and aged Colorbond, and goes under the Acratex Roof Membrane top coats.
